UN refuses to postpone sanctions, Iran accuses Britain, France and Germany of

The United Nations Security Council has rejected a belated attempt to delay the reimposition of sanctions on Iran, leaving Tehran in a difficult diplomatic position a day before the deadline.

The decision came after claims by Western countries that weeks of talks had failed to result in a "concrete" deal, with Britain, France and Germany having offered a six-month extension if Iran met their conditions.

Speaking at the Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi thanked China and Russia for presenting the draft resolution, which received only four votes in favor from Algeria, China, Pakistan and Russia, while nine countries voted against, rendering it invalid.

Abbas Araghchi then accused the United States of "betraying diplomacy," before turning against the E3, the group made up of France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, saying they have "buried" diplomacy completely.

Iran called the Council's action "illegal," stressing that it hinders the easing of nuclear sanctions.

This rejection comes in the context of recent diplomatic efforts, where Iran and E3 representatives held multiple meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, in a last-ditch effort to salvage the negotiations.

However, tensions rose after the E3 announced in August that it had triggered the reimposition of broad UN sanctions against Iran. Now, with the sanctions reimposed, Iran is warning that this could lead to a further escalation in its nuclear program.
