Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has emphasized his idea that it is necessary for the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, to meet to end the war.
Asked whether a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy is possible, Orban said at the Ambrozeti Forum in the Italian city of Chernobyl that it is "necessary" and that the main issue is communication.
" If there is no communication, the war will get worse and worse ," said Orban in the discussion panel.
Zelensky, with whom Orbán said he has "good relations" even after the Hungarian leader's meeting with Putin in Moscow, is also attending the forum.
As president of the EU Council, Orbán tried to present himself as a "peacemaker" in the Ukrainian conflict, with a surprise visit to Kiev and then to Moscow. In recent weeks, both Putin and Zelensky have said they would welcome mediators in talks to end the conflict in Ukraine, but do not believe Hungary is an option.
Speaking at a panel discussion at Russia's Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin said China, Brazil or India could potentially help in the peace talks.
