The Israeli military warned earlier on Friday that it would attack Gaza City with "unprecedented force," telling residents to evacuate the south as it continues its ground offensive on the territory's largest urban center.
But many Palestinians say the journey is too expensive and there is no safe place to go.
"For several days, we have been trying to evacuate to the south, but we have not been able to find any means of transportation. We finally found a way to leave early this morning. We gathered our belongings and waited for hours, but so far no one has come and the driver is not responding to us ," Khaled al-Majdalawi, a Palestinian displaced in the western Gaza city, told the AFP news agency, describing "intense and continuous" shelling.
Nivin Ahmed, 50, fled south from Gaza City to the central town of Deir el-Balah on Thursday, walking with seven family members.
"We walked more than 15 km, we were dragging ourselves from exhaustion. My youngest son cried from exhaustion. We took turns dragging a small cart with some of our belongings ," she told AFP.
Mona Abdel Karim, 36, said she had been unable to secure transport to the south and had slept on al-Rashid Street for two nights with her family, waiting for a driver.
"I feel like I'm going to explode. We can't walk, my husband's parents are old and sick, and the children are too weak to walk," she said.
Toufic Abu Mouawad left a camp for displaced people in Gaza City with nowhere else to go.
"The situation is really bad. All night long, the tank was firing shells. I want to leave with the boys, the girls, the children. This is the situation we are living in. It is a very tragic situation. We call on all Arab countries and people with a clear conscience to support us ," Abu Mouawad told Reuters news agency.
