The announcement by the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation that the Europeans intend to organize a "Serbian Maidan" on November 1 caused a violent reaction in Serbia, writes the Balkans correspondent of the Russian newspaper Kommersant, Gennady Sisoyev.
President Aleksandar Vučić, thanking the SVR for the warning, expressed his confidence that "the last attempt to seize power by force will be undertaken with certainty."
Opposition leaders claim that Vučić is, on the one hand, lying to the Russians that the West wants to overthrow him, and on the other hand, lying to the Americans and Europeans that the Russians want to overthrow him.
Experts are convinced of the inevitability of mass protests on the anniversary of the tragedy in Novi Sad, Kommersant reports.
Vučić reacted to the warning from the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation extremely quickly, without waiting for his return from Tokyo, where he was on an official visit.
Earlier this week, the SVR announced that the European Union is behind the months-long unrest in Serbia and that on November 1 - the first anniversary of the tragedy in Novi Sad, which served as the reason for the protests - there will be an attempt by the "Serbian Maidan" aimed at "bringing to power a obedient leadership, loyal to Brussels, in the largest country in the Balkans."
Thanking the SVR for the warning, the Serbian President stressed that "Serbian security services will definitely contact them regarding this."
“It is one of the most powerful foreign policy services and we always carefully monitor their announcements, analyze them and take certain measures,” explained Aleksandar Vučić and added: “I have no doubt that those who organized the ‘color revolution’ in Serbia will not give up. A lot of money has been invested and therefore there is a last-ditch attempt to seize power by force. We have been prepared for this for a long time.”
Accusations of organizing the "Serbian Maidan" from abroad were rejected in the European Union, as well as within the opposition ranks in Serbia itself.
"There is no external plan, no Maidan or any conspiracy. There is only the will of the citizens of Serbia to confront corruption, robbery and dictatorship," the Democratic Party announced.
And the leader of the Party for Freedom and Justice, Dragan Dilas, accused the country's president of "lying to the Russians that the Americans are overthrowing him, and to the Americans and Europeans that the Russians are overthrowing him."
According to him, "while pro-government media reports that the European Union, European countries and their intelligence services are behind the protests, the Serbian ambassador to Washington, Dragan Sutanovac, on Vučić's orders, walks the corridors of the State Department, assuring Americans that the Russian special services are behind the civil uprising, and Vučić personally conveys the same story to European politicians."
