The leader of the CDU, Friedrich Merz, the candidate for chancellor of Germany in the early parliamentary elections, said that if he wins, he will make drastic changes regarding the granting of German citizenship, but also its revocation, for dangerous criminal elements. .
And while the SPD-led coalition of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, otherwise known as the 'traffic lights', eased the measures for naturalization, Merz warns of drastic changes.
The CDU leader said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag that the easing measures put in place by the previous coalition would cause "simply a lot of problems in Germany".
"That's why we need to change it very quickly," Merz said.
The traffic light change to the nationality law came into effect last summer. Since then, naturalization has been possible after only 5 years - and even after 3 years, if the integration performance is particularly good.
Earlier the limit was 8 years. In addition, the SPD, the Greens and the FDP also expanded the possibilities for dual citizenship.
Merz, on the other hand, is in favor of dual citizenship in Germany always being an exception to the rule - even suggesting that it be abolished. "We are bringing additional problems to the country. At least it should be possible to revoke German citizenship at the same level if we admit that we have made a mistake when it comes to people who commit crimes," the CDU leader said.
In the Welt interview, Merz also called for tougher rules on migration policy. Border rejections and deportations of criminal migrants should be done easily.
This requires a closer exchange of data between the German security authorities and the immigration authorities and the Federal Office for Migration. In this way, risks can be identified quickly and comprehensively. "And to avoid further attacks or crimes, foreign criminals should be deported no later than the second offense," said Merz.
