Warned the demolition of mosques, the Swedish prime minister condemns the calls

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has condemned the statement by far-right leader Jimmie Åkesson, who said mosques should be demolished, calling the statement "disrespectful".

"In Sweden, we don't destroy places of prayer," Kristersson said Monday, Swedish newspaper SVT reported.

Åkesson came under fire on Saturday after he said Sweden should stop building new mosques, while suggesting it should also demolish existing ones in the country.

Kristersson, whose government coalition does not include the SD but depends on its support, criticized Akesson for a lack of respect.

"I think this is a disrespectful way of speaking, a polarizing way of speaking. This is not what Sweden represents in the world," added Kristersson.

Åkesson's speech caused outrage in Sweden and abroad, and forced Kristersson to make a statement on the social network X, where he reiterated the "constitutional right to religious freedom" in Sweden.

"In Sweden, we don't destroy places of prayer. As a society, we must fight violent extremism regardless of its reasons, but we will do so within the legal and democratic framework," he wrote.

In Sweden, whose NATO membership must be ratified by Hungary and the Muslim-majority country Turkey, there have been several incidents that have caused tensions with Middle Eastern countries this year.

The burning of the Koran several times earlier this year prompted protests and major criticism of Sweden.

Protesters in Iraq attacked the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad in July, setting fires in its compound.

Last year, Sweden was the target of a major disinformation campaign, which claimed that social services in Sweden "abduct Muslim children" and place them in Christian homes, prompting authorities to publicly deny the allegations. . /Politico
