A diplomatic marathon at the international level is unfolding these hours after the four-day ceasefire ends today, during which Hamas releases hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.
At noon on Monday, it was announced that the joint efforts of Egypt and Qatar for the two-day extension of the cease-fire in Gaza are expected to bear fruit, as discussions with Israel are at an advanced stage.
The two-day extension will include the release of 20 Israeli hostages and 60 Palestinian prisoners.
According to Reuters, citing Egypt's security services, 11 Israeli hostages and 33 Palestinian prisoners are expected to be released today.
Negotiations on "thorns"
For the rest, ERT reported that according to a statement from Netanyahu's office, the list of names of the hostages to be released is being reviewed, but there are some snags.
In particular, Israel claims that Hamas separates families: For example, it releases the mother and holds the child hostage, or vice versa, while, according to an agreement, the families must be handed over to Israel together.
Hamas, for its part, has sharply criticized Israel over the release of Palestinians from prison, claiming that it is changing names and adding others to the list.
The third group of hostages was released on Sunday in exchange for the release of 39 other Palestinian prisoners.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is pushing for a full humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas instead of a temporary one, as "the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is worsening every day".
Germany also supports the extension of the ceasefire. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stressed that the ceasefire should last "as long as possible" to free the hostages and send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The four-day ceasefire came into effect on Friday morning. The hostage deal is a complex and multi-layered diplomatic process, with many parties involved in the negotiations.
However, this is a process that has borne fruit. It has already led to the release of a total of 58 hostages held in Gaza and the release of 117 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, as well as an increase in aid to Gaza.
So far we know:
· Under the terms of the Israel-Hamas agreement, 39 Israeli hostages in Gaza have been released so far.
· Another hostage, Russian-Israeli Roni Krivoi, was also released by Hamas on Sunday
· In return, 117 Palestinians have been released from Israeli prisons
· At the same time, a Filipino and 17 Thai hostages were released, following separate negotiations with Hamas
· Four Israeli hostages had already been freed before the deal that began last Friday, while a fourth was rescued by the Israeli military.
· Around 240 people in total are estimated to have been held hostage in Gaza immediately after the October 7 attacks /Reuters
