The British Parliament brings back the "Rwanda" plan again

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will again face right-wing lawmakers in his party this week as his legislation to deport asylum seekers in Rwanda returns to parliament.

The British government is trying to reduce a surge in asylum seekers making the perilous crossing in small boats from France to England's south coast.

Most of those arriving by boat say they are fleeing wars and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. But the British government says that around 90% of those traveling are men and many of them migrants with economic problems and not genuine refugees.

The Supreme Court in Great Britain finally overturned the so-called "Rwanda" plan to stop illegal immigration, considering Rishi Sunak's government's plan unconstitutional. Rwanda has already been paid 240 million pounds by the British government in exchange for accepting every asylum seeker, but so far, no one from Britain has been sent to Rwanda due to legal challenges. None of them would have the right to go to the UK, including those receiving asylum, but would take refuge in Rwanda or seek asylum elsewhere.

Sunak faced the most serious threat last month, when he saw dozens of his lawmakers revolt during the first parliamentary vote on the bill. The opposition accused the government of violating human rights, as Rwanda does not enter the countries with the highest ratings for respect for human rights. Currently Rishi Sunak has put his prime ministership on the line on his promise to stop illegal immigrants and has vowed to implement a plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda ahead of elections expected this year.

Parliament will vote on a series of proposed amendments aimed at blocking the departure of asylum seekers to Rwanda. If the legislation is not changed, the right-wing Conservatives will threaten to vote against the government in the final parliamentary phase in the House of Commons, which could take place on Wednesday evening.
