Mass tourism has hit the Italian city of Venice. Now local authorities there have begun to take measures to reduce the number of tourists. Tourists now face a number of rules and restrictions while in Venice.
Tourists face fines of between 25 and 500 euros if they do not comply with the measures, which prohibit the use of loudspeakers in open spaces.
Venice has said it will limit the size of tourist parties to 25 people from Thursday in the latest effort to reduce the impact of crowds on the lagoon city.
Local authorities will also ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides in measures aimed at "protecting the tranquility of residents" and ensuring freer movement of pedestrians.
The restrictions cover the city center and also the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. In April, Venice became the first city in the world to introduce a visitor payment system in an experiment aimed at preventing day-trippers from arriving during peak periods.
The pilot scheme, which has been followed closely by other European tourist spots, covered 29 days and ended in July, opening the way for a period of consultation to decide how to proceed with the project in the future.
There are a number of exceptions to the rules for tourist holidays. Children up to two years old are not included in the count and the restriction is waived for visiting students or those on an educational trip.
