"After the war, go home," Israelis 'turn their backs' on

While Herzi Halevi, the chief of the cabinet, apologized in front of the whole nation, the prime minister's office released a statement to clarify that Benjamin Netanyahu was only notified at dawn of the horror Saturday, that the invasion had begun, or about the suspicious movements of the paramilitaries of Hamas inside Gaza. Even according to them, not even for the decision made by the secret services to reinforce the south with a rapid intervention unit against terrorism, but now it is too late for such excuses.

Israelis don't expect an act of coercion from the longest-serving prime minister in the country's history, they expect the end of this war - however long it may be - to end Hamas and return to vote in new leadership.

Netanyahu's party and his entire far-right coalition - according to polls published by the newspaper Maariv - explode, the prime minister's party finds itself with seats in parliament, almost halved. Meanwhile, the opposition group led by Benny Gantz, according to the polls, reaches 41 MPs from the current 12 if it enters the elections now.

In this first week, the undisputed leader of Likud (Netanyahu), a total of sixteen years in the prime minister's chair, is paying not only for the disaster around the Belt, the 1300 people massacred, the 150 hostages kidnapped by terrorists. Commentators in the mainstream newspapers accuse him of taking five days to accept Gantz's proposal from the opposition to form an emergency government and a limited war cabinet in which the two sit alongside Gallant. Negotiating and maneuvering as if a week ago several thousand Palestinian paramilitaries had not invaded the south of the country.

"This agreement - writes Yossi Verter in the newspaper Haaretz - is the least evil for him. It saves him an internal quarrel with the two parties of the radical right, it reserves the power to make diplomatic-military decisions in extended sessions of the government". Gantz has already clarified that the agreement is only valid for the duration of the conflict.

According to Yossi Verter, one minute after the ceasefire, the opposition Gantz must leave the joint government and go to the polls to send Netanyahu home. / Corriere Della Sera
