Britain to recognize Palestine by September if Israel does not accept ceasefire

Following French President Emmanuel Macron's warning that France will recognize the state of Palestine, Great Britain has issued a similar threat.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer declared that the United Kingdom will recognize Palestine as a state by the UN General Assembly meeting in September if Israel does not accept a ceasefire and take concrete steps to end the "terrible situation in Gaza."

" We have started airdrops of aid, but at least 500 trucks of aid must be allowed into Gaza every day. The time to recognise Palestine is now, in order to give hope for a two-state solution, a secure Israel and a viable Palestine ," Starmer said.

According to him, the decision is part of an “eight-point plan”, coordinated with France and Germany, aimed at changing conditions on the ground and restoring hope for long-term peace. “ If by September 9 Israel does not take serious steps to stop the war in Gaza, to stop any annexation in the West Bank and to engage in a sustainable peace process, Britain will recognize the state of Palestine ,” the British government statement said.

This stance comes at a time when Gaza is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. According to international organizations, more than half of Gaza's population is facing extreme hunger, while thousands of children are at risk of malnutrition. The blockade, the destruction of infrastructure and the restriction of humanitarian aid have led the situation to be described by the United Nations as a "catastrophe of biblical proportions."

Pressure on Israel to open humanitarian corridors is growing, while more and more European states are openly considering recognizing Palestine as a political step to force a change in the situation on the ground.
