Tech mogul Elon Musk changed his mobile number and stopped responding to Mike Johnson's messages after he began clashing with President Donald Trump over the Republican tax and spending bill.
"I sent him a long message and then his phone number changed because after the crash, something happened to his," Mike Johnso told New York Post reporter Miranda Devine about the angry billionaire who abruptly ended their conversation.
Although Musk didn't even warn him about the sudden break in their communication, Johnson noted that it didn't stop him from communicating with him multiple times through third parties. He was optimistic that Musk and Trump could resolve their differences.
"Honestly, I think the president had the same view, but there was some tension there," the Republican leader in the House of Representatives said of the two billionaires who publicly disagreed over the "Big and Beautiful Bill of Rights Act," as the US president described it.
Musk left the Trump administration in late May and a few days later publicly railed against the law, complaining about its impact on the deficit in particular.
Reducing the deficit was Musk's top priority when he headed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
However, the tech mogul's efforts to thwart the mega-bill were unsuccessful, as Republicans narrowly defeated it in Congress and Trump signed it into law on July 4.
The next day, Musk, who had condemned the bill as an "abomination," announced his decision to form a new political party, the "Party of America."
Trump quickly responded, calling Musk's idea "ridiculous." "I'm sorry to see Elon Musk completely derailed, becoming basically a mess over the last five weeks," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Johnson also said there were likely "a multitude of factors" behind the Trump-Musk "divorce" and that he would "let everyone else judge the motives behind it."
