Nearly five million people are at risk of "catastrophic food insecurity" in the coming months in war-torn Sudan.
So says a UN document seen by AFP, while the international body called for unhindered access and a ceasefire.
These people are at level 4 of the five-point IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) scale for food insecurity used by UN agencies. Stage 4 populations in West Darfur and Central Darfur are likely to move to stage 5, UN officials warn. The most recent IPC report estimated that 4.9 million people were in a stage 4 emergency in Sudan, including over 300,000 in Central Darfur and over 400,000 in West Darfur.
However, in total, almost 18 million Sudanese now face severe food insecurity, a tragic "record" figure, especially during the harvest season, and 10 million higher than in the corresponding period last year.
Women, children and displaced persons are even more "threatened". Nearly 730,000 children, including 240,000 in Darfur, are estimated to be acutely malnourished.
