Beijing has urged the United States to lift unilateral tariffs that Washington announced after a US Supreme Court ruling struck down some of the Trump administration's tariff measures as illegal. The call was made by China's Commerce Ministry, which is conducting a "comprehensive assessment" of the impact of the court's ruling and has called for the lifting of tariffs imposed on trading partners.
In an official statement, the Ministry reiterated that “There are no winners in a trade war and protectionism leads nowhere,” referring to the US tariff measures. It also underlined concern about possible moves by the United States to maintain the increased tariffs in other forms, citing trade investigations as an alternative being considered in Washington.
The new global tariffs of 15% will take effect immediately and are expected to remain in place for 150 days, with exemptions for only certain products. The plan was announced by President Donald Trump after a Supreme Court ruling struck down previous tariffs under the economic emergency law, creating uncertainty in US trade policy.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also said it is paying close attention to any further measures the United States may take to maintain the increased tariffs, promising that China will resolutely protect its trade interests.
