Passengers on an Air Canada flight that collided with a fire engine at New York's LaGuardia Airport have described the "chaos" that followed as the plane spun out of control on the runway. They say the pilots, who lost their lives, managed to save hundreds of passengers.

"It was a normal flight at first, just like any other," passenger Jack Cambot told Fox News, referring to the plane that had arrived at LaGuardia from Montreal. "The landing was very hard. We landed very quickly and, just two seconds later, the crash happened," he added.

"The plane was moving left and right. It was chaos. It seemed like no one was controlling it," he said.

Another passenger said it looked like the pilots had activated reverse thrust at the last moment, an action that may have saved many lives.

"We were just sitting down and about 30 seconds later we felt a strong push forward, then a loud noise and it felt like we were sliding sideways along the runway," passenger Brady Sego wrote on Reddit, according to the New York Post.

"Someone said the pilot tried to activate reverse thrust at the last moment. Honestly, they probably saved our lives. I would like to tell their families how grateful I am. They are heroes," he added.

Both pilots lost their lives, while 41 people are hospitalized.

An audio recording was released earlier that captures the dramatic moments before and after the fatal crash, where an air traffic controller is heard admitting that he "made a mistake."

The recording, published by the New York Post, shows the tension in the control tower. According to LiveATC, controllers asked another approaching plane to abort its landing while the incident was unfolding on the ground.

The fire truck was initially given permission to cross the airport's runway 4, before controllers ordered it to stop. "Stop, stop, stop... Truck 1, stop! Stop!", the controller can be heard saying.

Meanwhile, a controller instructs a Frontier aircraft (operating Delta flight 2603) to abort its approach, before regaining communication with the Air Canada aircraft (Jazz flight 646), which had already collided with the fire engine.

"Jazz 646, I see you've been hit by a vehicle. Stay put. I know you can't move. Vehicles are on their way toward you," he can be heard saying.

Controllers also informed the Frontier crew that the runway would remain closed and asked if they wanted to return to the parking area. “We have procedures in place, what we saw was not good,” the Frontier pilot replied, while the controller added: “I tried to contact them… we had an emergency and I messed things up.”

"No, you did the best you could ," the Frontier pilot replied, responding to the controller after the incident.
