Senior officials from Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan have held separate talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over the past two days in an effort to ease tensions and pave the way for a deal, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported in a post on the X platform, citing a source familiar with the developments.
According to the same source, “mediation is ongoing and making progress,” while discussions are focused on ending the war and addressing outstanding issues. However, it is still unclear at what stage the negotiations are and whether the parties have really come close to a formula for ending the conflict.
The uncertainty deepened after Donald Trump declared that “very good and productive talks” had taken place with Iran and decided to postpone for five days some planned US strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. Markets reacted immediately: oil prices fell and stock markets rose after these statements.
Iran, on the other hand, has publicly denied having held talks with the US, either directly or through intermediaries. This denial contradicts Axios' reports that there have been direct contacts between Witkoff and Araghchi in recent days.
Against this backdrop, the diplomatic picture remains unclear: Washington speaks of productive contacts and active mediation, while Tehran publicly rejects these claims. At the moment, there is no independent confirmation that the parties have reached a clear framework for a “full and total resolution” of the war.
