Conflict escalates/US urges citizens to leave the Middle East immediately

The US State Department has issued an urgent alert to all US citizens in the Middle East, urging them to leave "immediately" due to serious security risks associated with the escalating conflict with Iran.

The announcement was made on March 2, 2026 by Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs, Mora Namdar, who, through an official post, made a clear call for Americans to “DEPART NOW”; to leave now, using commercial means of transportation, while they are still available. The call comes at a time when the region is experiencing an unprecedented escalation following joint US-Israeli attacks on targets in Iran and Tehran’s counterattacks in several Middle Eastern countries.

The list of countries included in the warning is extensive and includes Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, including the West Bank and Gaza; Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. According to international media, this is considered the most extensive warning of its kind by the State Department since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The situation on the ground remains extremely tense. Several major airports in the region have temporarily suspended operations, while international airlines have canceled dozens of flights due to the risk of missile and drone attacks. There are numerous reports of explosions in several regional capitals and the activation of air defense systems in several Gulf states.

The wording "Depart Now" is one of the most serious warnings used by American diplomacy and usually signals a high risk of immediate military escalation, sudden closure of airspace, or inability to organize official evacuations if the situation worsens. With this announcement, Washington seems to be making it clear to its citizens that they must act as soon as possible, before exit routes are limited.

Meanwhile, the State Department has announced that emergency consular lines are active 24 hours a day to assist American citizens in the region. Developments are happening at a rapid pace and the situation remains unclear, as tensions between the US, Israel and Iran continue to deepen.
