Catania mafia boss Benedetto “Nitto” Santapaola died on Monday afternoon, March 2, in the prison ward of Milan’s San Paolo hospital. He was 87 and was serving a life sentence as one of the most important and violent figures in Cosa Nostra.
Santapaola was held in the Opera prison under the strict 41-bis regime, known as the “strong prison”, which is applied to the leaders of mafia organizations to cut off contacts with the outside world. After his health deteriorated, the authorities transferred him to the special medical ward for prisoners under this regime. The Milan prosecutor’s office has ordered an autopsy.
Born in Catania in 1938, Santapaola was considered one of the top leaders of the Sicilian mafia since the 1970s. He led the Santapaola-Ercolano clan for decades, with strong influence in the Catania area and beyond.
Authorities have implicated him in dozens of trials for mafia organization, murder and drug trafficking. Investigations linked him to the period of mafia assassinations that shook Italy in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as to his alliance with the Corleone clan led by Totò Riina.
The courts ultimately sentenced him to life imprisonment as the mastermind behind several mafia massacres. He also played a role in the execution phase of the Capaci assassination on May 23, 1992, in which judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife, and his escort agents were killed.
Authorities arrested him on May 18, 1993, after a long period on the run. His death closes an important chapter in the history of the Sicilian mafia and the bloodiest period of the clash between the Italian state and Cosa Nostra.
