Shortly before the United States launched military operations against Iran, delegations from both countries clashed in harsh tones in Geneva, at a meeting focused on Tehran's nuclear program.

According to NBC News, citing official US sources, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi raised his voice during discussions with President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff. Jared Kushner was also present at the meeting.

The report says Araghchi insisted that Iran has an “inalienable right” to enrich uranium. He challenged the American side to state whether the US claims an “inalienable right” to stop Iran. At the height of the debate, Witkoff reportedly replied: “If you prefer, I can leave.”

After the meeting, members of the US delegation briefed President Trump on developments. According to the same sources, the president expressed dissatisfaction with the way the talks had gone and the lack of progress.

A few hours later, in the early hours of Saturday, Trump posted a video on social media declaring that "major military operations" against Iran had begun. He said the decision came after lengthy negotiations that, he said, had yielded no results.

"They were not willing to stop nuclear research. They were not willing to declare that they would not have nuclear weapons," Trump said, arguing that a diplomatic solution was no longer possible.

The Geneva meeting appeared to mark the last point in efforts at dialogue before military escalation, deepening the divide between the two countries and shifting the crisis from the negotiating table to the battlefield.
