Trump administration aims to destroy ballistic missiles and warns of escalation of military operation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Capitol Hill that the Donald Trump administration believes the objectives of the military operation against Iran can be achieved without the commitment of ground forces. He warned that the most severe phase of the strikes has not yet begun.
"We are not positioned for ground troops at this time, but the president has those options. He is not ruling anything out," Rubio told reporters.
Rubio explained that the current objective of the US military is to destroy Iran's ballistic missile launchers, missile stockpiles and production capabilities. He also included the Iranian single-engine attack drones and naval fleet, noting that these pose a threat to global maritime transport.
"I won't reveal tactical details, but the heaviest strikes from the US military are yet to come. The next phase will be even more punitive for Iran," he declared.
Rubio confirmed that the administration had notified congressional leaders of the military operation and had fully complied with legal requirements. He said the official notification was sent on Monday, and before the strikes began he contacted members of the so-called “Gang of Eight,” the group of eight top congressional leaders who receive classified information on national security operations. According to one official, Rubio managed to contact seven of them before the strikes began.
