Illegal fishing, British Foreign Minister fined 2,500 pounds

British Foreign Secretary David Lamy could face a fine of 2,500 pounds (around 2,900 euros) after he went fishing last week with US Vice President JD Vance and admitted he did not have the required permit.

Vance and Lamy were photographed fishing in the lake at the British Foreign Secretary's home at Chevening House, in southeast England, ahead of a bilateral meeting as part of the US vice president's working holiday in Britain.

All anglers are required by law to have a valid licence when fishing, regardless of whether they catch anything or whether the fishing is on private land. Violators can be fined up to £2,500.

Lamy's office stressed today that the Foreign Minister had not obtained the necessary permission and has since tried to correct the error.

"The Foreign Secretary wrote to the Department for the Environment regarding an administrative oversight which meant that the appropriate permits had not been obtained for fishing on a private lake as part of a diplomatic engagement at Chevening House last week," a Foreign Office spokesman said in a statement.

The US Vice President is in England with his wife Usha and their children, who are spending this week at the Dean estate in the Cotswolds, following their stay at Chevening House.
