Plans for peace, Trump: Zelensky and Putin to come together to end the war!

US President Donald Trump has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin will have to "come together" to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine.

"I think President Putin and President Zelensky are going to have to come together. Because, you know what? We want to end the killing of millions of people,"  Trump said from the White House, after swearing in Howard Lutnick as US Secretary of Commerce.

"I think we have a chance to reach an agreement. I had to make sure that Russia wanted it," he said, referring to a meeting on the war in Ukraine held this week between senior American and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Trump also added that he will not go to Moscow on May 9 to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II and that the United States is close to signing a minerals agreement with Ukraine.

"We're close and I think they want this. It's important, it's a big deal ," Trump said.

Three anonymous sources close to the developments told Reuters news agency that in the ongoing discussion of the minerals agreement, Washington has used the argument of the possibility of withdrawing Elon Musk's Starlink system over Ukraine if no agreement is reached.

Darya Kalenyuk, executive director of the Kyiv Center for Anti-Corruption Action, told Radio Free Europe that the system is vital for Ukraine's defense.

"It provides internet access to the front line, it is very difficult to fight without access to Starlink," Kalenyuk said.

Ukraine has deposits of 117 of the world's 120 most used minerals and metals. Access to these resources could be worth trillions of dollars in total.

Trump is making efforts to end the war in Ukraine and has held separate conversations with both leaders.

Speaking about the minerals agreement, Zelensky said he hopes something fair will be achieved.

"This is an agreement that can increase the value of our relationship, and the main thing is to analyze the details so that it can work," he said two days after Trump sharply criticized him, calling him a "dictator" who risks losing his country if he "doesn't act quickly."

In his address on February 21, Zelensky said that he had spoken on the phone with leaders of several European countries.

"Europe must and can do much more to ensure that peace is achieved," he said, after talks with leaders of Germany, Poland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Croatia.

He says it will be possible to achieve an end to the war, as Ukraine and partners in Europe have "clear proposals."

"On this basis, we can guarantee the implementation of the European strategy, and it is important that this is done together with America,"  he concluded./REL
