New details have come to light regarding the uprising of the Wagner group. Yevgeny Prigozhin reportedly planned to arrest two Russian military chiefs in the mutiny organized by his mercenary group over the weekend, but his plans were intercepted and their capture eluded.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff General Valery Gerasimov were the targets of the plot, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Western officials.
Prigozhin allegedly planned the attack while the pair were on a visit to southern Russia. But the Russian domestic service got wind of the scheme, prompting Shoigu and Gerasimov to change their plans, unnamed officials told the WSJ.
With the plan backfired due to the deconspiracy, Prigozhin was reportedly forced to move to implement the plan sooner than intended.
The New York Times also reported that top Russian general Sergei Surovikin knew in advance of Prigozhin's plans and is now in jail and being questioned.
