The President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, said that the procrastination of the European Union's enlargement process is shaking the credibility of the bloc, and this, according to him, represents a threat to democracy in the Western Balkans.
At the USA-Adriatic Charter (A-5) conference in Skopje dedicated to stability in the region as well as raising awareness and readiness for collective defense against the greatest threats, Pendarovski emphasized the need to speed up the process of integration of the countries of the region into the European Union.
"Unfortunately, the delay of European integration, for various reasons, practically in all the countries of the Western Balkans, is shaking the credibility of the European Union. The slow pace of the integration process in the bloc is one of the threats to democracy in the Balkans. Some public opinion polls show that support for Western-oriented organizations and countries is declining, and for the first time in three decades, support for some other regional organizations and other management models is increasing," Pendarovski stressed at the command conference. the American forces in Europe and the heads of the armies of the member states of the Adriatic Charter (A-5), held on September 27.
According to Pendarovski, the procrastination of European integration creates the risk of hybrid threats and the collapse of the region's stability.
In this conference, the Russian aggression in Ukraine was also discussed, in which case support was given to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The commander of the US Army Europe Command, General Christopher Cavoli, said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine shows the value and importance of collective security and collective-territorial integrity.
"All the countries that are present here have important joint cooperation programs and participate as partners and allies in the modernization of NATO within the concept of collective defense. The Russian invasion of Ukraine also reminds us that we must work for stability every day. The recent events in this region also show that we must all contribute to stability every day," said General Cavoli.
The participants of the conference have signed a joint declaration for the deepening of mutual military cooperation and for maintaining and strengthening security in the region.
