Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and the rest of the activists detained in Israel for participating in an aid flotilla to Gaza were greeted with cheers and applause as they arrived in Greece.
Thunberg could be seen raising her arm in a fist as people applauded. She was carrying a bouquet of sunflowers and roses. Before they left the airport, chants of "Free Palestine, free " and " From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free " could be heard among the crowd.
Israeli authorities said 171 detainees had been deported to Greece and Slovakia. Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Office said it was supporting British citizens detained in Israel.
Greta Thunberg spoke to supporters and members of the media after arriving in Athens, Greece, along with others detained in Israel for participating in an aid flotilla to Gaza.
The Swedish peace activist told the crowd that "a genocide is happening before our eyes " before being interrupted by cheers.
Someone silenced the crowd and she continued: " No one has the privilege of saying we are not aware of what is happening. No one in the future will be able to say we did not know. Under international law, states have a legal obligation to act to prevent and stop a genocide. That means ending complicity, applying real pressure and stopping the transfer of arms. We are not seeing that. We are not seeing even the bare minimum from our governments."
She said that international systems are betraying the Palestinians and are unable to even prevent the worst crimes from happening.
" I will never, ever understand how people could be so evil that they would deliberately starve millions of people who live trapped under an illegal siege, as a continuation of decades and decades of oppressive oppression, apartheid and occupation ," Thunberg said.
She added that the humanitarian flotilla was "the largest ever effort to break Israel's illegal and inhumane siege by sea."
" We cannot take our eyes off Gaza. This genocide and other genocides are being enabled by our governments, our institutions, our media and our companies. It is our responsibility to end this complicity ," she concluded.
