Turkish authorities have arrested 357 people suspected of being linked to the Islamic State, in an operation carried out in 21 provinces of Turkey.

This was announced today by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

"During simultaneous operations carried out this morning by our police forces in 21 provinces, we have arrested 357 suspects linked to the Islamic State. We never give the slightest chance to those who try to bring this country to its knees through terrorism ," the minister said in a post on X.

Three police officers were killed yesterday during an operation against ISIS in Yalova, northwestern Turkey.

The operation, in which six members of the jihadist organization, all Turkish citizens, were killed, was followed by clashes between police and ISIS members that lasted for hours.

Last Thursday, the Istanbul prosecutor ordered the arrest of 137 suspected ISIS members "following information indicating that the ISIS terrorist organization was planning attacks during Christmas and New Year celebrations."

Turkey, which shares a 900-kilometer border with Syria, fears infiltration by this jihadist group, which remains active in the neighboring country.

Turkey has stepped up operations against suspected Islamic State members this year as the group regroups globally.

Nearly a decade ago, the jihadist group was blamed for a series of attacks on civilians in Turkey, including gun attacks on an Istanbul nightclub and the city's main airport, which killed dozens of people.

Turkey was a key transit point for foreign fighters, including those from the Islamic State, entering and exiting Syria during the war there.

Police have carried out regular operations against the group in the years since, and there have been few attacks since the increase in violence between 2015 and 2017.
