What if Trump won the election?
Donald Trump

To think that a few thousand American voters could change the course of the world with their decision...

More than half of the world's population will participate in national elections this year, a rare event in human history.

From Russia to Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Indonesia, voters will be asked to elect members of Parliament and new heads of state. At first glance, it may seem like the triumph of democracy. But in most cases, the result is already known: In Russia, India and almost everywhere in Africa, ruling parties prevent opposition leaders from challenging them.

However, this does not change the important nature of this new year. Many votes will resonate beyond their borders. Elections in Taiwan next week will determine the future relationship between Taipei and Beijing and, as a result, between China and the United States.

But it is the elections in the USA, in early November, that will seal the future of the entire planet. If Donald Trump returns to the White House, the fate of Ukraine, the Middle East and, in general, global security will be disrupted. Russia will have every chance of winning, hopes for peace in the Middle East will fade and the pillars of our security will have to be reinvented – with the possible death of NATO. To think that a few thousand American voters could change the course of the world in this way is truly staggering.

Europe must prepare

Even if the script is far from written – it is not yet certain that Biden and Trump will be in the final race – Europe must now prepare for all possible outcomes.

First, Europe will become the sole leader in supporting Ukraine. By creating a real war economy, the bloc will be able to mitigate the disastrous effects of a possible return of Trumpism. For now, there is still a long way to go: only a third of the European program of 2 billion euros to arm Ukrainians has been fulfilled.

We must change the very sense of scale, increase our resources tenfold with the dual objective of supporting Ukraine and developing our defense industry, pending the military disengagement that Trump has announced.

But more than that, we need to change our strategic attitude. We must take power and protect our economic and industrial interests, in a context of heavy rivalry, bloc against bloc. Knowing that we are alone and that the forces of decline threaten us as much at home as they do against our rivals around the world. /Adapted "Pamphlet" from "World Crunch"
