A senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the end of major Israeli military operations in northern Gaza could also mark the end of the war.
Mark Regev said that the Israeli forces are preparing for the destruction of the "military machine of Hamas" in the north.
"Of course, there may still be small groups of Hamas fighters out there that we still have to clear out. But we can say that we have had significant success in the northern Gaza Strip ," he said.
Regev said that any reconstruction and return of Palestinians to the area "will mark the end of combat operations".
He also said that he hopes that very soon the Palestinians will return to their homes.
Asked if he thinks the war will last three months or more, Regev indicated that the destruction of Hamas "will take time," but he said that does not mean it will necessarily be the same.
"We will blow up [Hamas'] underground terror network, the tunnels, the underground launch sites, the headquarters... and as the operation moves forward, there is a change in tactics. We did not want to see civilian deaths and we have tried to We are doing our best to avoid a high death toll," he told Sky News.
