Brazilian authorities confiscated former President Jair Bolsonaro's passport and sought the arrest of some of his closest aides as part of investigations into a suspected coup plot after losing the 2022 election.
Federal police raided the offices of Mr Bolsonaro's Liberal Party and confiscated documents and computers. Although the right-wing leader lost the election, he did not issue the decree to set in motion the final phase of the coup he is accused of.
Court documents show that the alleged plot involved Mr Bolsonaro signing a decree in the event of a loss in the 2022 election to declare that the vote had been rigged and thus justify a possible military intervention and the calling of new elections.
Although Mr. Bolsorano lost the election, he did not sign the decree to set in motion the final phase of the suspected plan. A source involved in police operations told the Reuters news agency that the blocking of the passport hints at the possibility of his arrest in the future.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said opponent Bolsonaro was "not prepared to leave" office after losing the presidential election.
"He left for the United States 'crying' because he may have participated in the drafting of the coup attempt. But let's wait for the investigations. I hope that soon we will have an answer regarding what really happened in Brazil" , said President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The decision of the judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, to confiscate the passport of the former President Bolsorano, was made public on Thursday.
Police said in a statement they searched the homes and offices of suspects who "acted to stage a coup" to keep Mr Bolsonaro in power after losing the October 2022 election to leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Mr Bolsonaro told a Brazilian newspaper on Thursday that he had left the government but was still "suffering from relentless persecution". He said that the country was being run by someone else and attention should be diverted from him.
The seizure of the passport marks the escalation of the investigation into the former president, a far-right politician who presented himself as the Brazilian version of former President Donald Trump.
Bolsonaro has been banned from running for political office until 2030 and faces further criminal investigations that could land him in prison. He has denied all the accusations and says that the investigations have political motives.
