Accused of being mentally unfit to lead, Biden reacts angrily: How the hell dare

In a surprise speech on Thursday, US President Joe Biden reacted angrily to a report by Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was investigating Mr Biden's unauthorized retention of classified documents after he left the vice-presidential post in 2017.

Prosecutor Hur describes President Biden in the report as "an elderly man with good intentions and a weak memory."

The White House accused prosecutor Hur of using "highly prejudicial language" inappropriate for the Justice Department.

President Joe Biden will not face charges of knowingly obtaining classified documents after he left the vice presidency in 2017, special prosecutor Robert Hur announced Thursday, dropping a landmark case against the president as he seeks his term of office. second in the White House.

Prosecutor Hur writes in the report that he made the decision not to press charges after a 15-month investigation, since Mr. Biden was cooperative and that it would be difficult for him to be punished.

In the report he describes the president as an "old man with good intentions and a weak memory".  The assessment brought long-standing concerns over President Biden's age and memory back into the spotlight.

The report describes the memory of the 81-year-old Democrat as "foggy", "vague", "wrong", "poor" and with "severe limitations".

The document states that Mr. Biden could not remember important moments in his life, such as the death of his son Beau, or the time he served as vice president.

"My memory is fine," President Biden angrily responded Thursday evening at a White House briefing and denied having forgotten the date of his son's death.

Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015, aged 46. Although President Biden will not face charges of mishandling classified documents, the assessments in the report could damage Mr. Biden's message to voters that he is able to lead the government and protect the country.

As the election nears, voters have grave doubts about Mr. Biden's age after witnessing his guffaws, coughing, slow walking and falls in public appearances.

President Biden said that the assessments of his son's memory and death "are irrelevant comments" that "have no place in this report".

"How the hell dare you raise this issue?  Honestly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself that it's none of their business. On Memorial Day we hold services to remember him, attended by friends, family and people who loved him. I don't need anyone, I don't need anyone to remind me when he passed away," Mr. Biden said.

In response to journalists' questions about his memory, President Biden said that he is "the most qualified person in the country to be president and finish what he started"./ VOA
