French police have prevented a suspected terrorist attack in central Paris, arresting a young man suspected of planting an improvised explosive device near a Bank of America branch in the 8th arrondissement.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, at around 03:25, on Rue de La Boétie, an area near the Champs-Élysées. According to information published by French media, officers from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC), deployed there as part of a security operation to protect American interests, intervened as the suspect had just placed the explosive device at the entrance to the building.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reacted publicly, stressing that the rapid police intervention averted a “violent act of a terrorist nature.” He added that the level of preparedness remains high, linking this to the international context and tensions related to the war in the Middle East.
According to preliminary data, the explosive device consisted of a transparent canister of approximately five liters with an as yet unidentified liquid, combined with an explosive charge containing approximately 650 grams of pyrotechnic material. The device was seized and is being analyzed by Paris police laboratories.
The suspect, a young man who claims to be of Senegalese origin, was arrested at the scene and is in custody. According to investigative sources, he is previously known to the police for narcotics-related matters. At the time of his arrest, he had no identification documents and his age has not yet been confirmed, while authorities do not rule out the possibility that he is a minor.
Preliminary investigations suggest that he may have been recruited through social media, specifically Snapchat, and that he was paid around 600 euros to carry out the act. A second person suspected of being involved has managed to escape and is being sought.
There has been no official confirmation of the perpetrators or possible masterminds of the attack. However, French media reports that an unknown group calling itself “Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya” had previously mentioned on Telegram channels the possibility of an attack on an American bank in Paris. Authorities have not verified a direct link between this group and the case in question.
The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has taken charge of the case and has opened an immediate investigation. The investigations are being carried out by the Paris judicial police in collaboration with the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI).
The incident comes at a time of heightened security measures in France, where authorities have identified American interests, Jewish communities and Iranian opposition groups as potential targets, amid ongoing international tensions.
