Kiev has asked its Western partners for support in expanding its domestic arms production industry. Germany and the US have concrete plans for joint arms production.
German arms concern Rheinmetall plans to produce artillery shells for the Ukrainian armed forces at a new plant in Ukraine. This was announced by Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal. “A plot of land in a safe region of Ukraine has been allocated for the construction of a new plant to produce Rheinmetall shells for the Ukrainian armed forces,” Shmyhal wrote on the X platform.
Kiev is asking its Western partners for support in expanding its domestic arms industry to repel Russian forces. The Russian occupation of Ukraine has been ongoing for four years.
Joint arms production between Ukraine and the United States
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had discussed with US envoy Keith Kellogg the possibilities of developing joint weapons production and the imposition of further sanctions against Russia by Washington.
“We discussed various ways of cooperation – how to achieve real peace and ensure the security of Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote after their meeting in Kiev on the messaging app Telegram. Part of the talks included “strong bilateral agreements on the joint production of drones and weapons, which we have proposed to the US. We expect a positive response from the US.”/ DW
