US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis, Tennessee. Trump claimed on Friday that the Democratic-led city has a huge crime problem. "We're going to fix this like we fixed Washington," he added.
Memphis is the third Democratic stronghold in the US, after Los Angeles and the capital Washington, where Trump is deploying troops. The city is known as the home of the blues and rock 'n' roll; the Graceland mansion of singer Elvis Presley, who died in 1977, is located there.
Memphis had the highest violent crime rate and the third-highest homicide rate in the United States last year, according to a statement from the Trump administration.
However, local police are seeing crime at its lowest level in 25 years. On Tuesday, the Memphis Police Department reported that crime continued to decline across all categories through the first eight months of the year. "Homicide is at a six-year low, aggravated assault is at a five-year low and sexual assault is at a 20-year low," it said.
Meanwhile, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, a Republican, assured Trump of his full cooperation. He said he has been in contact with the US government for months. "The next phase will involve a deployment of the Tennessee National Guard, the FBI, the Highway Patrol, city police and other law enforcement agencies," he explained on X.
