Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, has reacted to statements by Donald Trump, who warned Taiwan not to seek independence from China, stressing that the US does not want "war on the other side of the globe."
In a Facebook post, Lai declared that Taiwan will not be "sacrificed" and will not become the subject of negotiations, emphasizing that the island will not give up its sovereignty, democratic system, and free way of life.
The Taiwanese president's statement came a few days after the summit in Beijing between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, a meeting that has increased concerns in Taiwan about the future of relations with the US.
Trump said earlier that the US administration was still considering new arms sales to Taiwan, adding that Washington did not want the island to declare independence relying on US support.
Lai thanked the US for its support for peace and stability in the region, but stressed that Taiwan will not provoke conflict nor accept pressure from Beijing.
"Taiwan will not be sacrificed and will not be the subject of negotiations under any circumstances," he declared.
China continues to consider Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under Beijing's control.
