The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, Oleksandr Syrsky, acknowledged today that Russian forces are intensifying pressure in northern Donetsk, especially in the direction of Pokrovsk, Dobropillya and Novopavlovsk, as well as on the Lyman axis. He visited combat units on the ground and stressed that Ukrainian troops are waging “heavy defensive battles” against dominant Russian forces, repelling attacks and even carrying out limited counterattacks.
Meanwhile, a Russian airstrike on the town of Kostiantynivka left at least three people dead and four wounded, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin, who reported that Russia fired eight Smerch missiles at the town, also hitting a market. According to AFP, the casualty figures are higher, with at least six civilians killed in today's attacks in eastern and southern Ukraine.
The crisis is also affecting Ukraine’s neighbors. In eastern Poland, a Russian Shahed drone exploded overnight in a cornfield, provoking a strong reaction from Warsaw. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called the incident “another provocation from Moscow,” while Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz warned that Russia was testing NATO with repeated violations of the airspace of Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia.
Warsaw has announced that it will send an official diplomatic protest, considering the incident a serious threat to the security of NATO countries, at a time when peace discussions are taking place on the international stage.
