The sinking of the super-luxury yacht Bayesian near Palermo, Sicily has sparked strong reactions and questions about the causes of the tragedy that has so far claimed the lives of six people, while 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, the daughter of yacht owner and tycoon Michael, remains missing.
The ship sank after being hit by bad weather and a tornado, known as a maelstrom, on Monday. According to the accounts, the ship disappeared under the waves within 60 seconds, a sudden and catastrophic incident which was probably difficult for the team to foresee.
Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of Italy's Sea Group, the company that built the ship, claims the crew had 16 minutes to warn passengers after the ship was "dragged from the anchor" before it sank.
Costantino insisted that the suffocation process was not as instantaneous as some claim, saying: “The torture lasted 16 minutes. The boat did not sink in a minute as some scientists have said. As the Daily Mail reports, analysis of AIS (Automatic Identification System) data by the Marine Traffic website confirms the time quoted by Costantino, although it is not yet possible to verify what happened during those minutes. The records also show that a second ship, the Sir Robert Baden-Powell, followed a similar Bayesian course at the same time. The ship remained at sea during the storm and helped rescue survivors. Sir Robert Baden-Powell's captain, Dutch sailor Karst Börner, told Italian media that weather conditions were unpredictable but his crew was prepared. He described the sea eddies as 'very strong and intense' and added: 'We had difficulty keeping the ship in place with the engine and the anchor. The yacht was behind us. We looked every now and then to see where he was. In a moment, she disappeared."
Costantino also revealed in an interview that there were multiple human errors that led to the tragedy, such as the hatches being open and the boat's keel not being fully lowered. He insisted the disaster was preventable and added: “Ask yourself, why didn't any fishermen come out of Porticello that night? A fisherman reads the weather and a boat doesn't?'
A company spokesman said "procedures were not followed" on the super-luxury liner and that the sinking was due to "open hatches despite bad weather forecast hours before". According to him, the ship was built to a very high standard and would not have sunk if proper procedures had been followed by the crew.
Bayesian, a 56m boat with a 74m mast, was built in 2008 and according to the captain of sister ship Rosehearty, David Hutchinson, she was “bulletproof”. However, the events of this tragedy reveal the potential consequences of deficiencies and errors in handling extreme weather at sea.
