Protest announced for March 15 in Belgrade, EU calls for easing of tensions

The European Union told Serbia that fundamental values are at the core of "our common European project" and must be respected, as it called for a reduction in tensions.

This reaction from Brussels comes after warnings of a large rally in Belgrade, planned for March 15, in which Serbian authorities predict there will be "major violence", while the country's president has warned of arrests.

"This is also about freedom of assembly as a fundamental right," the EU's information office said in a response sent to Radio Free Europe.

The EU also said that citizen participation plays a key role in the development of a healthy and democratic society, including promoting transparency and accountability.

In recent days, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has warned several times that "the opposition will organize major violence on March 15" and that "all those who participate in it will be arrested."

"The EU consistently calls for a reduction in tensions, creating conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, including political actors, institutions and members of civil society, to address the reforms necessary for Serbia's future in the EU," the response from Brussels states.

EU officials confirmed that they are closely following the internal political situation in Serbia and the large mobilization of students and other groups.

When asked about Vučić's statements that the West is behind the "colorful revolution", as he calls the mobilization of students and citizens in Serbia, EU officials stressed that "disinformation and political rhetoric, including those against the EU and member states, have no place on the path to EU integration."

Serbian students have called for a rally, which they have described as "the largest gathering ever", in the Serbian capital on March 15th.

Students from different regions of Serbia have already set off on foot to Belgrade, traveling dozens of kilometers to participate in the rally in Belgrade.
Students in Serbia have been organizing rallies in several major cities in Serbia for four months now, demanding responsibility for the deaths of 15 people in Novi Sad, after the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1, 2024.

Students, through blockades and protests, are demanding the publication of all documentation related to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad Railway Station, to determine responsibility for the accident, the prosecution of the attackers of the participants in the protests so far, as well as the suspension of procedures against those arrested in the demonstrations.

Serbian authorities claim to have met all of the students' demands, while a group of experts formed by the Senate of the University of Belgrade denied this claim in its report./ REL
