Russian photographer Dmitry Markov has passed away at the age of 42. The news was reported by local media in his hometown of Pskov, citing his friends. The cause of Markov's death is still unknown.
Markov, who relied only on an iPhone for his photographs, became famous for capturing images of everyday life in Russia.
His photograph of a masked police officer sitting under a portrait of President Vladimir Putin became a symbol of the 2021 protests against the jailing of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
The photo was sold for 2 million rubles ($21,760) in an online auction, with the proceeds going to people arrested or fined during rallies in support of Navalny.
Markov had suffered from drug addiction throughout his life. He volunteered at an orphanage and worked as a teaching assistant at a charity helping people with disabilities.
Markov published three photo books and has more than 800,000 followers on social networks.
