The hijacking of the Israeli cargo ship was not simple sea piracy. It was a warning from a major state that would have been sanctioned at the highest levels in Tehran.
On the sunny day, commandos from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps hijacked a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which enormous amounts of oil and gas pass every day.
If this strait were to close, it would have very big consequences for global trade, in short it would cause chaos.
Why have the Iranians done this? Well, timing is everything.
The ship, MSC Aries, is Portuguese-flagged but affiliated with Zodiac Maritime, which is part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer's portfolio.
Tensions between Israel and Iran are already extremely high. American intelligence even claims that an Iranian missile attack on Israel could happen very soon in retaliation for the attack on the Damascus consulate.
Taking the ship is unlikely to prompt a military response, but the signals it sends are clear.
It's a provocation for Jerusalem, but it's also a message to Israel's allies that Iran could wreak havoc by closing the Strait of Hormuz.
In that sense, it is a projection of Iranian power and a warning that standing with Israel could have consequences.
