Former British ambassador to Iran, Richard Dalton, stated that he is not at all surprised by Iran's harsh reaction to President Trump's demand that Iran "surrender."
"This is what you would expect from any country that is not possible and this is what you would expect from Iran," Dalton told Al Jazeera.
"The threats to his identity, to his existence, the damage done to civilian facilities, not just military or potentially nuclear ones, have clearly angered people in Tehran - not just supporters of the ruling system," he added.
"The unpredictability from the US is now a serious concern for the region and for the entire world."
Dalton stressed that US officials are most likely conducting "war simulations" for the use of their bombs against Fordow - the heavily fortified underground facility that is one of the key points of Iran's nuclear program.
“To cause serious damage at Fordow, the bombs would have to penetrate tens of meters of rock and concrete,” Dalton said. “American officials will be assessing their chances of achieving this technically very difficult objective.”
He added that the White House will also consider two key factors: first, "what Iran is capable of doing in retaliation against American lives, against American bases and interests, and against US allies in the region"; and second, the potential political consequences if Trump backs down from "his commitment to the American people not to get the country into new wars."
