Footage released/ Execution in broad daylight in Kiev, Secret Service colonel

A senior colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) was shot dead in a parking lot in the Holosiivskyi district of Kiev in broad daylight, in front of local residents. The attacker fled on foot and has not yet been caught.

The news has been confirmed by Ukrainian authorities and footage verified by Reuters shows the assailant using a silenced weapon to shoot the victim several times. The colonel, whose name has not been officially released, was part of the SBU's special operations unit and involved in sensitive missions since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.

“Immediate measures are being taken to identify and apprehend the perpetrator,” Kiev police said. The SBU confirmed the opening of a criminal investigation into the murder and described the victim as a prominent employee in the fight against Russian secret services.

The assassination occurred just a few months after the publication of coded SBU operations against Russian targets, including "Spider Web," a drone operation that destroyed Russian strategic aircraft deep inside Russian territory, as well as the liquidation of a Russian general in Moscow, through a bomb hidden in an electric scooter.

Foreign sources speculate on the possibility of a coordinated revenge by Russian intelligence services. Spokespeople close to the Kremlin have not hidden their satisfaction with the assassination, describing it as a "clear signal" to their opponents.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet confirmed who is behind the execution, but the professional nature of the attack and the fact that the victim was an active colonel in the country's special services have raised serious suspicions of a politically motivated act.

Investigations continue, while security measures have been increased in Kiev and official reactions from the government and President Zelensky are expected.
