Russian President Vladimir Putin is pressuring Tehran to accept a nuclear deal that would not allow it to enrich uranium, according to the news site Axios.
Russia's official position is that Iran has the right to enrich uranium. However, Putin has taken a tougher stance since the 12-day war between Israel and Iran.
Moscow has encouraged the Iranians to agree to "zero enrichment," according to three European officials and an Israeli official familiar with the matter.
Two sources said the Russians also briefed the Israeli government on Putin's position on Iran's uranium enrichment.
"We know that's what Putin told the Iranians," a senior Israeli official said.
Putin also expressed this position in phone calls last week with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.
"Putin would support zero enrichment. He encouraged the Iranians to work towards that so that negotiations with the Americans would be more favorable. The Iranians said they would not consider it," said a European official with direct knowledge of the matter.
Putin's position is interesting given the extensive support Iran provided to Russia during its war with Ukraine, including supplying hundreds of attack drones and surface-to-surface missiles.
