Russian President Vladimir Putin told Russian media that the war in Ukraine was caused by NATO's unprecedented expansion to Russia's border, violating all previous agreements. He stressed that the West did not respond to Moscow's concerns and was therefore forced to take matters into its own hands. He stressed that Russia itself determines the threats to its national security and that Western statements that NATO expansion poses no threat to Moscow are unfounded.
" After all, what were we arguing about all along? We emphasized that the security of one nation or group of nations cannot come at the expense of the security of another. This principle is enshrined in international agreements that all parties have ratified. Yet, in practice, what happened? One NATO expansion after another. We were repeatedly assured: 'There is nothing to fear; it poses no threat to you.' When we expressed our concerns, claiming that we believed it threatened us, what was the response? Nothing.
"We were simply told, without any hesitation, where to go with our thoughts. No one bothered to listen or consider our perspective. We know better what threatens us and what does not. It is our right to determine the degree of our security and the level of threats that can approach us from one side or the other ," Putin said.
He also spoke about the relationship with the US and President Donald Trump, for whom he said he has great respect. Putin stressed that Trump has come a long and dangerous path to return to power, as he recalled that he had survived two assassination attempts.
"I have great respect for the current US president. He has come a very long, difficult and dangerous path to return to power and the White House. We all know this well. He is a brave man, that is clear," Putin said.
