'Giant victory', Supreme Court gives Trump green light for immigration

President Donald Trump has hailed today's Supreme Court ruling as a "giant victory," after the justices were told their power to block his attempt to end birthright citizenship was limited.

The decision, which split the Supreme Court 6 to 3, will ensure that the 47th President's proposal avoids having to contend with orders issued by individual judges.

Immediately after the decision, Trump said: "Giant victory in the Supreme Court of the United States.

"The birthright citizenship scam has also been hit hard, indirectly. It's about the slave babies (same year), not the fraud of our immigration process."

All six conservative justices supported Trump, including three he personally appointed to the Supreme Court.

The case arose after Trump clashed with various judges over his proposal to end birthright citizenship.

Trump tried to push an executive order to deny citizenship to American-born children of people who entered the country illegally.

However, his proposal was met with a harsh backlash in the form of court orders.

The case the Supreme Court heard involved lawsuits filed in Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington. However, the policy remains blocked in the state of New Hampshire through a separate lawsuit that was not part of this case.

The Court's decision does not consider whether or not the policy is in accordance with the Constitution, but focuses only on the power of judges to impose bans with effect throughout the country.

After this ruling, Trump's proposal can move forward at the national level, but individuals or groups can continue to file new lawsuits at the state level. Judges can also impose new, narrower bans.

Trump's plan to reform citizenship has the support of 21 other states.

His administration has frequently clashed with federal judges who have blocked its policies, particularly over its aggressive use of executive orders on issues such as mass deportations, reforming federal agencies, restricting universities and law firms, and firing thousands of state employees.
