Germany's AfD faces divisions over conflicting stances on Russia

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is experiencing divisions within its leadership due to conflicting positions on Russia. Co-leader Alice Weidel publicly criticized several party officials for their visit to Putin's Russia, calling it unnecessary and wrong, while the other co-leader, Tino Chrupalla, said he sees no danger to Germany from Russia and that Putin has not caused him any personal harm.

The sharp differences between the two leaders reflect tensions within the party, which has historically shown sympathy for Russia, especially in the eastern part of the country, while the western part aims for rapprochement with the US and the MAGA movement.

The AfD is also facing criticism over its ties to Russia and its access to sensitive information, prompting accusations of espionage from traditional German parties. However, some party officials try to downplay the clashes, stressing that the different positions on Russia reflect regional realities and interests.

The party hopes to achieve its first result in the 2029 national elections, a challenge that, if realized, could destabilize the political scene of Germany and the European Union.
