The conflict between Pope Leo XIV and Donald Trump is escalating. The pressure is mounting in the Vatican, while at the same time a strategic shift is being observed. This conflict is not just a media clash. It represents a test of the direction the Vatican will follow in the 21st century and the level of internal support for this course. While the Pope's statements are clear in public, the situation within the Vatican walls appears more complex.
Pope Leo XIV has defined his orientation from the beginning: an uncompromising commitment to peace. During a prayer in St. Peter's Basilica, he called on world leaders: "Stop! The time for peace has come!" These words are not only religious rhetoric, but also constitute a political intervention. They are addressed, although not always directly, to Donald Trump.
The reaction from Washington was immediate and harsh. Trump called the Pope “terrible” on foreign policy issues and attacked him personally. The Pope, for his part, declared: “I am not afraid of the Trump administration.” Thus, a confrontation between the Vatican and the White House, previously unforeseen, has been created.
Within the Vatican, official reactions show a visible unity. The Italian Bishops' Conference expressed full support for the Pope, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also distanced herself in strong tones from Trump.
At the same time, a strategic shift is being observed in Vatican circles. According to the newspaper “Il Messaggero”, this new course represents a conscious departure from diplomatic reserve towards a clearer stance. The Vatican is reviewing its traditional role as a “soft power” and is gradually abandoning its avoidance of daily politics.
Pope Leo XIV is positioning himself as a moral counterweight to a political style that places power above norms. Vatican experts speak of a deeper ideological conflict: in the US, two visions of Christianity and political responsibility clash. According to “La Repubblica”, the Pope is regarded by both conservatives and progressives as a cosmopolitan and restrained figure.
However, this course is not without opposition within the institution. The Curia is not a homogeneous structure. In some conservative networks there is sympathy for Trump's approach, especially on issues such as national sovereignty, migration and cultural identity. These circles rarely express themselves publicly, but see the Pope as too involved in geopolitical conflicts.
On the other hand, Trump's open attacks have strengthened the Pope's position domestically. Even critics understand that weakening him would damage the institution as a whole, creating a kind of temporary solidarity.
The debate also involves doctrinal issues. The Pope supports the current Church line that no war can be considered completely just, while some conservatives refer to the older tradition based on St. Augustine.
The Pope continues to emphasize his theological arguments for peace, criticizing what he calls the “illusion of omnipotence” as a cause of wars. This stance represents a broader critique of a worldview that places force over right.
According to polls in the US, Pope Leo XIV enjoys a high level of popularity, while support for Trump is lower. His pontificate, still in its early stages, has already set the course.
