A powerful tornado tore through a small town in Iowa in the United States of America on Tuesday, killing many people and injuring dozens, authorities said Tuesday.
Footage from the town of Greenfield shows the massive devastation caused by the tornado; houses leveled to the ground and ruins everywhere. Several large wind turbines also fell.
"This tornado has destroyed a large part of this town. We can confirm that there are many victims from this tornado ," said Alex Dinkla, Iowa police spokesman.
Dinkla did not give the exact number of victims, and said the number cannot be known before Wednesday. At least a dozen people in Greenfield, a town of about 2,000, were injured by the storm. Because the town's hospital was damaged by the storm, the injured were sent to hospitals in nearby towns for treatment.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said she will visit Greenfield on Wednesday.
"While it is too early to know the impact of the storm, answers will come in the coming hours and days," she said.
The US National Weather Service had issued several tornado warnings for most of Iowa and several nearby states on Tuesday. /REL
