Trump administration's reporting on the war, Armed Services Committee

Members of the House Armed Services Committee said they were unhappy with a briefing from Trump administration officials on the war in Iran, its objectives and timeline, the latest sign of growing anxiety about the war effort even among members of Trump's own party.

The disappointment came as lawmakers prepare for an additional request to fund the war effort and replenish ammunition used so far.

Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, said she felt "misled" during the briefing and that officials didn't have many answers. She said she wouldn't vote for additional funding for now.

" The longer this goes on, the less support there will be for the war ," she said.

Republican Representative Clay Higgins said he was personally pleased with the briefing, but that it was controversial.

" I believe the members went there determined to not be satisfied with the administration ," he said.

Representative Derrick Van Orden, another Republican and Navy SEAL veteran, said he would oppose troops on the ground in Iran but appeared to support passing the request for more military funding.

Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the committee, said there is still a “gap” between what the administration says are its objectives in Iran and how they can effectively implement them. He argued that his Republican colleagues are now “caught” in a difficult messaging position.

Representative Jason Crow, a Democrat and combat veteran, also said that Congress is still "not getting answers" from the administration regarding its strategy and ultimate goal.

" This war is now in its third week, entering its fourth week, there are more questions than answers ," he said.
