US President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and its owners, including Rupert Murdoch, after it published an article about a "disgraceful" birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein.
The contents of the letter included a personal message and a drawing of a nude woman, purportedly signed by Trump.
The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida in federal court in Miami, seeks at least $10 billion in damages.
It names Rupert Murdoch, Dow Jones, News Corp, CEO Robert Thomson, as well as two Wall Street Journal journalists as defendants, with charges of false, defamatory, unfounded and contemptuous reporting.
Under US law, to win a defamation lawsuit, a public figure must prove not only that they were the subject of false information, but also that the defendant acted with “actual malice,” meaning they knew the allegations were false or deliberately ignored them.
Facing pressure to reveal more about Epstein, who died in his cell in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges, Trump on Thursday ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of grand jury testimony regarding Epstein.
A day later, the US government asked the federal court in Manhattan to release the grand jury transcripts in the case of Epstein and his former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Maxwell was found guilty in 2021 of her role in Epstein's sexual abuse of underage girls. She is appealing her 20-year prison sentence to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Trump has previously admitted to having contact with Epstein, but says the relationship ended after an "argument."
