Donald Trump has undoubtedly been at the center of this latest episode of the 12-day Iran-Israel war, leading the opposing sides towards a ceasefire and gaining the role of peacemaker.
But who else was operating behind the scenes and what specifically was Vladimir Putin's role?
Since the war broke out, the Kremlin leader has been constantly on the phone, in a desperate attempt to find a diplomatic solution, writes Ivor Bennett, Skynews correspondent in Russia.
The Russian president had spoken to all the protagonists, Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Peskov, while he was in contact with the leaders of China, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, before meeting face to face with the Iranian foreign minister in Moscow on Monday.
The main reason was to preserve Russia's regional interests, as Tehran is a vital ally for Moscow, which becomes even more important with the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria.
Another regime change in Iran could have potentially catastrophic geopolitical consequences for the Kremlin, a possibility that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called "unimaginable."
However, there is another reason why Vladimir Putin may have wanted to help Donald Trump defuse the crisis, and it has to do with Ukraine.
If Moscow could convince Iran to limit its response to the US attacks to a single symbolic strike, then this would have done the White House a great favor, which it could use in connection with the conflict in Ukraine.
"Instead of supporting Iran militarily, Russia forced it to withdraw" was the central idea.
In that case, Putin might expect Trump to do the same in Ukraine, either by withdrawing American military support or by pushing a peace deal in Moscow's favor.
This is perhaps why Moscow has repeatedly offered its services as a mediator in the US-Iran nuclear talks.
This makes it easier to reach an agreement with the hope of reciprocity.
Although we are currently unable to know the extent of Russia's role in the Israel-Iran conflict, the only thing certain is that Vladimir Putin played an active role.
